Double bassist and winner of a 2018 Avery Fisher Career Grant, Xavier Foley will perform live in concert for a free virtual event 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, presented by the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center.

Foley is building an international reputation as an emerging young artist of outstanding potential. He is first-prize winner of the 2011 International Society of Bassists Competition and only the second double bassist in the 57-year history of Young Concert Artists to win and join its roster. His performances transcend language; he performs music from around the world and communicates his virtuosity and passion for it on the double bass, which is rarely presented as a solo instrument. As a soloist, he has performed with orchestras including the Atlanta Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Nashville Symphony, Sphinx Symphony and Sphinx Virtuosi at Carnegie Hall, and at music festivals countrywide.
Foley, of Marietta, Georgia, is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and an alumnus of the Perlman Music Program. Foley is also a composer who infuses music with his passion for social equity. Recently, he was co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall and the Sphinx Organization for a new work, “For Justice and Peace,” to promote social justice.
The next LIVE Drive-in concert from the Alys Stephens Center this fall will be Eric Essix and Holiday Soul on Dec. 13.
