Since its inception in 1946 by the late Eva B. Dykes, the Aeolians of Oakwood University choir has traveled widely, touching the hearts of both young and old with their inspirational singing and “soul-stirring performances.” The choir has become an authoritative exponent of Negro spirituals and work songs, which express the yearnings of their forefathers to be free.
Currently under the direction of former Aeolian Jason Max Ferdinand, the choir will return to the Alys Stephens Center with a repertoire of choral music ranging from the Baroque era to the 21st century. The group was named the 2017 Choir of the World during the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales, and Ferdinand received the first Gwobr Jane Davies Outstanding Conductor award.
