Native Canadian actor and director Michael Greyeyes will give a lecture Tuesday, Oct. 29, recounting his own journey in the performing arts.
“Running Uphill: Making Theatre in the Ashes” with Michael Greyeyes is at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. An Evening with Michael Greyeyes is funded by the Jemison Visiting Professorship in the Humanities, along with additional support.
The lecture, free and open to the public, will be held in the University Hall Auditorium and followed by a discussion and reception. The visit is presented by the UAB College of Arts and Sciences’ Institute for Human Rights. Greyeyes will also give an audition workshop for students in the CAS Department of Theatre.
Greyeyes is a multifaceted, award-winning artist, choreographer, educator and leader. He is a proud Nêhiyaw (Plains Cree) from Muskeg Lake Cree Nation in Saskatchewan, Canada. Greyeyes is the founding artistic director of Signal Theatre, a Canadian theater company that creates intercultural and transdisciplinary performance work. He is best-known for his work as an actor, with a 25-year career in film and television, including the feature film “Woman Walks Ahead,” co-starring Golden Globe winner and Oscar-nominated actress Jessica Chastain, in which he plays the iconic Hunkpapa spiritual leader, Sitting Bull.
