University of Alabama at Birmingham has been announced for fall 2019.
A new season of musical performances by students, faculty and guest artists at theThe performances are presented by the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Music. Most performances take place in UAB’s Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall and Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center. Nearly all the performances are free, and those that are ticketed help support the department.
Student ensembles in the department annually feature more than 100 music majors and approximately 150 more students from many other majors, representing all undergraduate colleges and schools at UAB, says Department of Music Chair Patrick Evans, D.M. Ensembles include the Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo, Marching Blazers, Gospel Choir, Percussion Ensemble, Steel Band, Computer Music Ensemble, Electro-Acoustic Percussion Ensemble, Wind Symphony, Opera, and Brass Chamber ensembles, as well as Faculty Brass Quintet, Faculty Jazz Quintet and UAB Chamber Trio.
Evans says the department is excited to begin a new concert season with music ranging from a student performance of Preludes and Fugues from Bach’s “Well-Tempered Clavier” and newly composed chamber music in conjunction with AEIVA, to a world premiere performance of Michael John Trotta’s “Magnificat” and Yakov Kasman’s performances of Rachmaninoff with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra.
“We also will hear performances from the newly energized UAB Gospel Choir, jazz, computer music, the Marching Blazers, opera, and a wide range of guest artists in many styles and traditions,” Evans said. “This is one of the great thrills of having the three fine and performing arts departments in the same cultural corridor as AEIVA and the Alys Stephens Center, with the resources of a major research university and a diverse student population.”
