See compelling student art selected and curated by a professional artist in the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Annual Juried Student Exhibition, from Jan. 15-March 7, 2026, at Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts.
Now in its 50th year, the Annual Juried Student Exhibition is an experiential learning opportunity for students in art, art history and many other fields of study. UAB students who have taken art and art history courses in the past two years are eligible to submit works for the show, co-presented by AEIVA and the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Art and Art History.
See the student art alongside works by this year’s guest juror, Virginia L. Montgomery, in her exhibition “Blue Moon Cocoon,” says Minkyu Lee, chair of the UAB Department of Art and Art History.
“Our Annual Juried Student Exhibition offers a great opportunity for our students to exhibit their best work at a contemporary art museum,” Lee said. “By inviting a professional artist to judge the exhibition, we provide students with a meaningful professional review experience.”
An opening reception for both exhibitions will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at AEIVA, 1221 10th Ave. South. The reception is free and open to the public.
AEIVA is open from noon-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. Admission is free and open to the public. Visit uab.edu/aeiva for more information.
Montgomery, also known as VLM, is an award-winning experimental filmmaker and multimedia artist based in Austin, Texas. VLM works across video, performance, sound design and sculpture. Her surreal, synesthetic artworks unite elements of mysticism, physics, neuroscience and her own neurodivergent world through an idiosyncratic visual vocabulary of recursive symbols and repeating gestures, including imagery of luna moths the artist hand-raises in her studio.
Featured are works by students Kennedi Adamson, Chloe Black, Geremy Cantrell, Ava Capolupo, Aimee Choup, Elana Cowan, Maisie Davis, Emily Driggars, Robin Fernandez, Karah Gohn, Valeria Gutierrez, Martinee Hill, Gracie Hollington, Nadia Johnson, Jakyla Jones, Christopher Karg, Izzy Kennah, Journey King, Landon Krall, Lex Livingston, Kiya McGraw, Shreya Myneni, Anish Muhunthan, Jaylan Nelson, Joseph Ragsdale, Virgil Ravencroft, Angela Robinson, Lilly Sivers, Jayla Smith, Kara Theart, Arielle Tippett and Audrey Womack.
