“No longer just a stop on the Civil Rights trail, Alabama’s biggest city makes you want to stay (and eat) awhile” ~Condé Nast Traveler
Birmingham ~ The only U.S. city on the Travel Channel’s “Next Great Destinations” list
At a population of over 1 million, Birmingham, Alabama, has all of the amenities of a big city while still maintaining the warmth and hospitality of a Southern town. Tourists visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Vulcan Park and Museum, and Oak Mountain State Park. In recent years, our city has undergone its own cultural renaissance, with new restaurants, breweries, music venues, and theatres popping up on every corner. In 2017, Zagat named Birmingham in the 30 Most Exciting Food Cities in America and Birmingham is nationally recognized as a Top 10 Most Affordable Big City.
We have everything from farmers markets and art festivals to urban parks and performances by our very own St. Paul and the Broken Bones and the Alabama Shakes. Birmingham is a city that has something for everyone, and it is a vibrant backdrop for the extraordinary residency training we experience.
Birmingham is centrally located in the Southeast, just a short drive to the beach and mountains. For those desiring to explore nearby cities, Atlanta, GA, Nashville, TN, and New Orleans, LA are within 4 hours of driving distance. If you wish to explore outside the Southeast, the Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport provides easy access for long-distance travel.
