The Heersink Institute for Biomedical Innovation recently called for applications for the Heersink Institute Innovation Fellows Program. A total of nine applicants from across UAB were accepted into the program, with five from the Department of Radiology. The purpose of the program is for Innovation Fellows to apply the entrepreneurial mindset to their discipline and academic area. The 2022 Heersink Innovation Fellows from Radiology are as follows: 

 

• Desiree Morgan, M.D., vice chair of education, (Education): “Clinical Imaging and the Practice of Medicine - A Patient Centric Approach”
• Stefanie Woodard, D.O., assistant program director of the diagnostic radiology residency program and associate professor in the breast imaging section, (Applied Research): “Virtual Reality Breast Biopsy System”
• Manoj Tanwar, M.D., assistant professor in the neuroradiology section, (Applied Research): “AI for Automated Detection of Traumatic Brain Injury”
• Ryan Godwin, Ph.D., data scientist and instructor in the division of imaging informatics, (Education): “Applications of AI in Medicine”
• Virendra Mishra, Ph.D., associate professor in the division of advanced medical imaging (Applied Research): “Building an Imaging Research Infrastructure for Team Science”

"We are delighted to see Radiology take lead on innovation and proudly recognize our talented faculty into the inaugural class,” said Andrew Smith, M.D., Ph.D., vice chair of innovation in the Department of Radiology and clinical director of Artificial Intelligence for the Heersink Institute of Biomedical Innovation. “Heersink Innovation Fellows will have access to coursework and mentorship opportunities and will participate in a structured program to harness their innovation skills."

Applications to the Heersink Innovation Fellows Program remains open on a rolling basis.
