Dr. Valencia is a Board Certified Diagnostic Radiologist and Neuroradiologist, with Certificate of added Qualification (CAQ) in Neuroradiology issued by the American Board of Radiology.

She finished Medical School at the Universidad CES, located in Medellin, Colombia. This was followed by her Diagnostic Radiology residency at Universidad de Antioquia/Hospital Universitario San Vicente de Paul also in Medellin, Colombia where she was the Chief Resident; additionally during her residency she was selected as a Clinical Research Scholar at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill and successfully completed her Diagnostic Neuroradiology Fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW)/Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Prior to joining the faculty in the Neuroradiology section of the department of radiology at the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB), Dr. Valencia worked as a Neuroradiology Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) and the South Texas Veteran’s Health Care System, also in San Antonio for 8 years. Subsequently she spent 2.5 years in Private Practice as a full time neuroradiologist and worked as an expert consultant for a professional services firm specializing in biomechanical analysis and accident reconstruction in San Antonio, Texas.

Her areas of special interest include Craniocervical Trauma, Epilepsy and Stroke Imaging. She has a laudable record of service at both the institutional and societal levels, with multiple scientific and educational presentations and exhibits, several of which have been recognized with awards. She served as reviewer of different scientific journals, she was part of the primary and comprehensive UTHSCSA stroke committees related to the management of stroke patients, and also she was the radiology presenter for their epilepsy board, as well as the Neuroradiology schedule coordinator, counselor and mentor to high school and medical students with an interest in Radiology.
