The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Neuroradiology Division is home to a team of 11 full‑time faculty members, one 0.75 FTE academic neuroradiologist, and four fellows in our ACGME‑accredited fellowship program.
We perform and interpret 40,500 CT and 19,000 MRI exams, and our neurointerventional service performs 4900 diagnostic and interventional procedures annually. Our affiliate, The Children's Hospital of Alabama (ranked among the nation's best children's hospitals by U.S. News and World Report), hosts our fellows for pediatric neuroradiology training. In addition, three to five UAB Diagnostic Radiology residents rotate with our service each month.
At the university hospital we have three dedicated diagnostic MRI scanners, a hybrid intraoperative MRI suite and eight CT scanners, including photon counting CT Siemens Healthineers.
The Kirklin Clinic (outpatient center) is on the central campus and operates five (two 3T, three 1.5T) MR scanners and three multi-detector helical CT scanners. The latter include a 256 detector CT scanner Siemens Somatom Force, that employs dual energy technology for spectral imaging. Our practice also includes UAB Highlands Hospital (two 3T, one 1.5T, one 0.55T MRI scanners), Leeds, Gardendale, Auburn and the Birmingham VA Medical Center. We lease two (7 T, 3T) MRI scanners at the Auburn MRI research center.
We perform advanced MR imaging such as fMRI and tractography to identify eloquent areas of the brain for presurgical planning of brain tumor surgery and epilepsy. We perform vessel wall imaging, MR spectroscopy, MR perfusion (both Dynamic Susceptibility contrast and Arterial spin labelling ) and CSF flow studies.
Our 3D imaging lab is equipped with sophisticated post processing software for MR perfusion imaging, diffusion imaging, DTI/fiber tracking, MR spectroscopy, CT perfusion, and CT angiograms for both clinical and research applications.
Our fellowship program provides extensive clinical exposure and close collaboration with experts in neurology, neurosurgery, and head and neck specialties.
Faculty members participate weekly in:
- Brain tumor board
- Head and neck tumor board
- Skull base conference
- Neurovascular conferences
- Interdisciplinary neurology conferences
Fellows take part in daily neuroradiology case conferences, journal clubs, interdepartmental meetings, tumor boards, and ongoing clinical research. Rotations include Children’s of Alabama and the Neurointerventional Radiology service. Graduates complete the program prepared to serve as expert consultants in both routine and advanced imaging.
We hope this site provides you with a broad overview of our program.
