My name is Gloria Bennett, niece of Theresa Peagler, one of the former patients at UAB Spain Rehabilitation Center. Ms. Peagler had part of her leg amputated (up to her knee), so she was transported to UAB Spain for rehabilitation and extra care from the hospital. In addition, my aunt has experienced an abundant number of losses in life; she lost her parents, all her siblings, her daughter, and recently lost her husband several months ago.
As a result, she is faced with a lot of (untreated) trauma. I flew from the west coast to Birmingham to check on her and see how I could best support her. This is when I met Mrs. Juliana Sea (aka Jil), Ms. Peagler’s Case Manager.
Upon meeting Jil, I explained in detail all that was going on and asked for her assistance in meeting the needs of my aunt. I only had five days before I had to fly back home. Mrs. Sea did not hesitate to support my aunt and me in those five days and beyond.
Jil exhibits one of the highest levels of professionalism I have seen in a Case Manager. Jil possesses the ultimate “can do” attitude while taking on yet another difficult case with positive energy and a smile. Her heartwarming personality and engaging personal style enable her to interact effectively with my Aunt Theresa Peagler during her stay at UAB Spain Rehabilitation Center. Jil went over and beyond the parameters of her job to ensure that my Aunt was placed in a top-rated facility after the insurance deemed her “ready for release.” Jil orchestrated family meetings, transportation, and delicate conversations with my Aunt to include her in the decision-making process and validate her feelings. Jil demonstrates kindness, compassion, and empathy.
Moreover, Jil has a way of delicately delivering some harsh truths to a patient who had shut down. Following this conversation, I witnessed a long-lasting smile on my aunt’s face. I haven’t seen her smile in a long time. Theresa Peagler confirmed her satisfaction and interest in the plans Jil presented. Ms. Peagler had been very reluctant to change before this conversation. She called her son immediately and told him Jil’s plan and said she couldn't wait to see what life has in store for her. Jil Sea has changed Theresa Peagler’s life trajectory, even if it is for the short term.
Jil is thoughtful, attentive, calm, and friendly, even under the most stressful of circumstances. She took the time to gather the facts, ensuring that she came back with the best “exit” plan for my Aunt. Mrs. Sea followed up and followed through. On 3/3/22, Theresa Peagler was transported safely from UAB Spain to Brookdale-Skilled Nursing facility. Jil is a gem. God bless her. I felt she was in good hands when I had to fly back to the west coast. This wasn’t an easy decision.
I am writing to express my gratitude and ask you to recognize Mrs. Sea for her outstanding ability and willingness to go over and beyond for her clients/patients. My aunt is so happy over at Brookdale. I've called multiple times to make sure she was comfortable and satisfied with the facility and the service. I haven't heard her speak with so much life since my uncle got sick and passed away. My aunt wasn’t eating well for months, but now she is excited about eating. I can't thank Juliana Sea enough. Jil is an outstanding young woman, Case Manager, and family friend (we have adopted her).
Ms. Jeanette Ray, you have a phenomenal staff. A staff that recognizes the importance of human kindness, service, and helping those who may not be able to help themselves. This is a testament to your leadership.
Many blessings,
Gloria Chevette Bennett
