Sarah Lopes, DOThe University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) welcomes Assistant Professor Sarah Lopes, D.O. effective November 4, 2024. Dr. Lopes joins the department as a physiatrist specializing in stroke, amputee, EMG, and orthopedics.

Prior to joining the department, Lopes completed her residency at UAB’s Dept. of PM&R in 2024 where she served as Administrative Chief.

“Following my residency, I knew I wanted to join PM&R faculty because I love teaching medical students and residents. It was important to be a part of a department that offers a wide range of clinical opportunities,” says Lopes.

Lopes graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Mississippi State University with a major in biochemistry in 2015. She received her medical degree from William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2020. In medical school, Lopes was inducted into the Golden Humanism Honor Society, which recognizes senior medical students, residents, and physician teachers for excellence in clinical care, compassion, and dedication to humanism in service. It was created by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation for Humanism in Medicine in 2002 and has more than 45,000 members.

Lopes grew up on a horse farm in Tylertown, Mississippi. When she is not at the hospital, she enjoys spending time with her two children, baking, and running.
