img_1592.jpgDrs. Alyssa Lee and Chiamaka UmahFaculty, trainees and staff from the Department of Pathology were busy presenting their latest work at several conferences related to their respective specialties throughout the fall, and several received recognition.

The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) annual meeting took place September 3-6 in Chicago, Illinois. Greg Davis, M.D., M.S.P.H., Division Director, Forensic Pathology, was named President elect of ASCP during the annual meeting. Davis also moderated two sessions titled “Supporting the Laboratory Workforce through Data, Certification, and Collaboration” and “Public Policies Impacting the Practice of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.” Gene P. Siegal, M.D., Ph.D., Robert W. Mowry Endowed Professor and Executive Vice Chair, UAB Pathology, received the 2024 ASCP Philip Levine Award for Outstanding Research. Additional presenters from the department at ASCP include Chiamaka Umah, M.D., Huda Haq, M.D., and Hannah Buckelew. 

Dr. Sofia Canete-PortilloThe College of American Pathologists (CAP) annual meeting took place October 19-22 in Las Vegas, Nevada, and several of our colleagues presented there. Shi Wei, M.D., Ph.D., Division Director, Women’s Health, presented “Reduced GATA3 expression during breast cancer progression: a potential anchor for pulmonary metastatic deposition.” Diana Lin, M.D., presented the video microscopy tutorial course titled, “Frozens are not created equal: Challenges in Head & Neck & Dermatopathology.” Additional presenters at CAP include Alyssa Lee, M.D., M.S., and Dr. Chiamaka Umah. 

Katayoun Fomani, M.D., alongside UAB alumnus Mishi Bhushan, M.D., M.P.H., presented the poster “Analyzing Platelet Transfusion Refractoriness within a 6 month period: Highlighting the need for an algorithmic approach for optimal platelet utilization” at the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas in October.

Karen Scott, Ph.D., F-ABFT, presented the platform presentation, “Prevalence and Analysis of Xylazine in Postmortem Casework in Jefferson County, Alabama” at the Society of Forensic Toxicologists Meeting in St. Louis, Missouri in October alongside Lisa Bianco, D.O., who presented two posters, “Stability of Fentanyl in Fortified and Authentic Postmortem Blood” and “A Toxicological Investigation amongst the Homeless Population in Jefferson County, AL.”

Amy Theriault, D.O., presented the poster, “Comparison of forensic pathology board exam content to forensic pathology practice” at the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME) in Denver, Colorado in September. Neda Wick, M.D., Paul Benson, M.D., Richard Powers, M.D., and Rati Chkheidze, M.D., co-authored the poster, "Helianthus annuss: a forensic neuropathologic description of histologic findings in a case of Sunflower Syndrome" presented at NAME by Brandon Maveal, M.D. a UAB Pathology fellow alumni. 

Sofia Canete-Portillo, M.D., presented the poster, “Analysis of CD8 and FOXP Expression Ratios in Tumor and Stromal Compartments of Penile Squamous Cell Carcinoma across Different Subtypes and Grades” at the International Academy of Pathology meeting in Cancun, Mexico in October.

Several presented posters at the O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center Retreat in October, including Darshan Chandrashekar, M.Sc., Ph.D., and Kanako Okamoto, Genomic Diagnostics and Bioinformatics, Julia Ziebro, an undergraduate student in the laboratory of C. Ryan Miller, M.D., Ph.D.,and Amr Elhamamsy, a Ph.D. student in the laboratory of Lalita Shevde-Samant, Ph.D. Elhamamsy won the Tandra Chaudhari Award for Research in Women's Cancer.

img_4065.jpgDr. Darshan ChandrashekarIan Miranda, an M.D./Ph.D. candidate in the laboratory of Dr. Lalita Shevde-Samant, won second place for his poster presentation at the 2024 Southeastern Medical Scientist Symposium, which was held in September at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Additional presentations will continue throughout the fall. Gian Piero Carames, M.D., will present the poster, “PST018 Evaluation of Sensitivity, Specificity, and Risk of Malignancy in Patients with Pleural Effusion and Prior History of Breast Cancer” at the American Society of Cytopathology in Orlando, Florida in November.

Two members from the laboratory of Dario Vitturi, Ph.D., Nicole Arroyo-Diaz, Ph.D., and Mara Carreño, will present at the 2024 Annual Meeting of the Society for Redox Biology and Medicine in November.
