UAB Pathology faculty, trainees and staff were busy presenting their latest work at several conferences related to their respective specialties throughout the month of October, and several received recognition
The College of American Pathologists (CAP) annual meeting took place October 7-10 in Chicago, and several of our colleagues presented there, including Diana Lin, M.D., Associate Professor, Anatomic Pathology. Lin presented an invited video microscopy tutorial on, “Frozens are not created equal: Challenges in Head & Neck & Dermatopathology,” and a lecture on, “No Boundaries Practice Management Townhall: Your Path to Business and Leadership Success.”
The National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME) 57th annual meeting took place in San Jose, California, October 13-17, and several of our faculty and trainees attended.
During the meeting, Daniel Atherton, M.D., Associate Professor, Forensic Pathology was elected to a three-year term on the NAME Board of Directors and his colleague in forensics Daniel Dye, M.D., Associate Professor, was awarded the “Outstanding Service Award.” Brandi McCleskey, M.D., Associate Professor, Forensic Pathology, co-moderated a focused on wellness. Residents Amy Theriault, D.O., Kesley Green, M.D., Lisa Bianco, D.O., Falone Amoa, M.D., and Alyssa Lee, M.D., all presented posters at the conference.
The Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (AABB) meeting took place in Nashville October 14-17, and Mishi Bhushan, M.D., presented a poster on, “Single Unit Plasma Transfusions Within A 3 Month Period At A Level 1 Trauma Hospital, “and attended several presentations about platelet refractoriness and indications for apheresis.
At the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) annual meeting in Long Beach, California, October 18-20, Marisa Marques, M.D., Professor Emerita, received a distinguished service award, while Greg Davis, M.D., Division Director, Forensic Pathology, was named vice president of the organization for 2023-24. Davis also acted as Moderator and presenter, for a policy presentation, “Update on Activities to Strengthen the Medical Laboratory Workforce” and, “Roundtable Discussion: Laboratory Developed Tests (LDTs) Regulation.”
Meanwhile, residents Amy Theriault, D.O., and Sofia Canete-Portillo, M.D., presented a blue-ribbon finalist poster on, “The Utility of Phosphohistone-H3 Immunohistochemistry (PHH3) in Pheochromocytomas,” and another on, “Histological anatomical levels of penile shaft. A histochemical evaluation of 15 cases.”
Christina Crowe, M.A., Director of Communications, and colleague Hannah Buckelew presented a poster on, “Case of the Week: The Value and Impact of Sharing Pathology Cases Online,” about our department’s highly successful Case of the Week series, presented on our website and our social media accounts. Conference attendees enjoyed keynote speakers actor Rob Lowe, who addressed breast cancer patient advocacy, and scientific keynote speaker Kizzmekia Corbett-Helaire, Ph.D., scientific lead of the Vaccine Research Center's coronavirus team at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, where she studied coronavirus biology and vaccine development.
