Overview

The UAB Coagulation laboratory is a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) licensed and College of American Pathologists (CAP) accredited diagnostic laboratory. We offer a comprehensive test catalog from basic coagulation assays to specialized testing, covering a wide spectrum of bleeding and thrombotic disorders. We are the only Coagulation laboratory performing coagulation factor assays daily and on-demand in the city. Our lab is led by an experienced team of laboratory technologists and board-certified physicians to ensure that coagulation testing results correlate with the clinical picture of the patients being tested. We are committed to generating results that optimize diagnosis and treatment, and are available for consult around the clock. The laboratory runs approximately 30,000 tests per month.

Residency/Fellowship Training

Residents spend 4 consecutive months on the Transfusion Medicine rotation which includes Coagulation training completely integrated. Residents and fellows receive numerous didactic lectures from pathologists, laboratory technologists, and hematologists to round out their education in coagulation. In addition, regular sign-out and interesting cases are discussed on a daily basis. Residents and fellows are encouraged to spend time in the coagulation lab to learn about the technical aspect of each test that we run. All pertinent coagulation topics will be covered over the 4-month rotation, and a post-test is given to residents and fellows at the end of the rotation in order to gauge knowledge deficits in preparation for the coagulation portion of the Clinical Pathology board exam.

Our Testing

In addition to the basic coagulation assays such as the prothrombin time (PT), partial thromboplastin time (PTT) and fibrinogen, we also run numerous factor assays, platelet aggregation studies, von Willebrand disease panels, lupus anticoagulant workups and assays for heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). We have an in-house ADAMTS-13 assay for the rapid diagnosis or exclusion of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). New assays are always on the horizon, such as the chromogenic factor VIII for patients on Hemlibra (emicizumab-kxwh) and other long-acting Factor VIII replacement therapies.
