The Psychology and Counseling Program of UAB Center for Palliative and Supportive Care has been providing compassionate clinical care to patients and family caregivers since 2006, making it one of the leading pioneers in Palliative Psychosocial Care in the country.
Under the leadership of Dr. Kay Knowlton and Dr. Diane Tucker, founding Mothers of the Psychology and Counseling Program, and Dr. Sylvia Huang, the Psychology and Counseling Program has achieved more than 30,000 patients and family contacts and provided 850 staff consultations. As the need for training and interdisciplinary support continues to grow, the Program has expanded its clinical care and training to Geriatric Medicine since 2014 and Oncology since 2017 and developed the first Palliative Psychology and Psycho-Oncology Counseling Residency Curriculum in 2018.
Our multi-level training program (pre-master, post-master, pre-doctoral, post-doctoral) offers clinical practicum and internship to counseling and clinical psychology trainees who desire to hone knowledge and skills in working with the seriously ill population. To date, more than 45 master- and doctoral-level trainees have successfully completed their clinical training. Primary training sites include Palliative and Comfort Care Unit (PCCU), Supportive Care and Survivorship Clinic (SCSC), Hematology and Oncology Specialty Unit (HOSU) and Geriatric Clinic (GC) to provide learners a broad experience across inpatient, outpatient, and telehealth settings.
