Rotations
Annually, the department performs more than 4,000 surgical procedures and cares for more than 31,000 patients in multiple clinics. Chief residents routinely finish their training with over 3,000 cases. The sub-specialty areas are all staffed by fellowship-trained faculty members and residents have extensive exposure to all aspects of otolaryngology – head and neck surgery. Strong basic, translational, and clinical research opportunities are available.

Research
In addition to a broad clinical and surgical experience, the residency program fosters training in the basic sciences and research.
- Dedicated research rotation is led by Director of Clinical Research. Residents are mentored in research from PGY2-5 and complete a three-month research rotation. Through this rotation, residents are expected to have one published paper and present at a national meeting before completion of training.
- Specialized instruction occurs in weekly conferences, including talks given by faculty from related specialties, and by visiting faculty.
- Residents participate in a monthly journal club with an emphasis on current topics in ENT.
- Monthly research meetings where faculty and residents meet to discuss the current research projects that are occurring within the department and address any obstacles facing them.
- Residents routinely present research during Grand Rounds and are provided with feedback from their fellow peers.
- Resident Research Day is held each year when the residents present the results of their ongoing research activities. Following Resident Research Day, special awards are given out. First place is rewarded by the Alabama Society of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. Second place is awarded by UAB. Additional special recognition is given to the resident team who wins the Research Resident Race.
Additional Academic Endeavors
Attendance at local and national otolaryngology conferences is encouraged and supported when the residents are making presentations. For those who are in good academic standing, financial support is provided for residents who travel to present at national conferences within UAB guidelines.
