The UAB Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) is excited to welcome Gena Dunivan, M.D., as division director of the Division of Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery. Dunivan will also serve as vice chair of Mentorship and Faculty Development for the department.

Dunivan joins UAB from the University of New Mexico (UNM) where she was an associate professor in the UNM Division of Urogynecology. She was also the fellowship director of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery and associate dean of Graduate Medical Education (GME).

"I am thrilled and honored to be joining this fantastic division and department,” says Dunivan. “I am looking forward to caring for the women of Alabama."

Dunivan has dedicated her career to improving the lives of women who suffer from pelvic floor disorders and conducting research focusing on health care disparities. She is also passionate about patient-provider communication as well as educating and mentoring future physicians.

“Dr. Gena Dunivan brings considerable clinical expertise, leadership experience, and talent to UAB,” says Warner Huh, M.D., FACOG, FACS, professor and chair of the Department of OB/GYN. “The Division of Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery has a longstanding history of success and is a nationally recognized group. Under her leadership, I fully anticipate that the division will continue to raise the bar in this area of women’s healthcare.”

Additionally, Dunivan will serve as vice chair of Mentorship and Faculty Development. In this role, she will be in charge of faculty development and mentorship, particularly for the junior faculty, and oversee the department’s trainees. She will also create and implement internal and external mentorship plans based on faculty members’ interests.

After receiving her Bachelor of Science in Biology, Dunivan attended the University of New Mexico School of Medicine where she received her M.D. degree. Following medical school, Dunivan completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of California, San Diego, and then completed her fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
