In the last several years, UAB Medicine and Heersink School of Medicine have worked to bring leadership development to faculty and staff through the UAB Medicine Institute for Leadership and Momentum in Medicine programs.

UAB holds its administrative professionals in the highest regard. April 26, 2023, is Administrative Professionals Day – allowing us to recognize and celebrate our administrative professionals while also highlighting the administrative resources offered by UAB. Most recently, the Developing Emerging Administrative Leaders (DEAL) program was established to offer development opportunities for current administrative professionals through training experiences and networking, to assist administration with their career paths and plans of advancing within UAB and UAB Medicine.

The Heersink School of Medicine Office for Diversity and Inclusion (Heersink ODI) had a Q&A with the Director of the Office of Identity, Inclusion, and Collective Conscience (I2C2), Shyla K. Fields, MBA about the work of her office and her role as a staff diversity liaison. In our interview, Fields speaks of going beyond Black History Month into our collective thinking.

Medical students honored their outstanding mentors, professors, courses, and course directors at the annual Argus Awards Ceremony on Friday, Jan. 6.

For Black History Month, the Heersink School of Medicine Office for Diversity and Inclusion sat down with a few employees and learners who are making a difference around UAB to hear why the commemorative month is important to them.

Thanks to grant funds from the Comprehensive Urban Underserved and Rural Experience (CU2RE) Program, virtual reality and expanded simulation training are making their way to medical education in Huntsville.

Tiffani Maycock, D.O., associate professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine and director of the UAB Selma Family Medicine Residency Program, has been awarded the 2022 Dean’s Excellence Award in Service.

Eighteen faculty members across Heersink School of Medicine’s departments have received 2022 Dean’s Excellence Awards in recognition of excellence in the areas of teaching, research, service, mentorship, and diversity.

In part one of the Heersink School of Medicine’s Office for Diversity and Inclusion’s Black History Month series, the Department of Family and Community Medicine discusses a program helping students to understand the history of racism in medicine and to create better patient experiences and healthier communities going forward.
