Shi Wei, M.D., Ph.D., Hazel Gore, M.B.B.S., Endowed Professor in Women’s Health and director of the Division of Women’s Health, was recently recognized by Wiley for his 2024 article “Best practices for achieving consensus in HER2-low expression in breast cancer: current perspectives from practicing pathologists” as a top viewed article in the journal Histopathology.
Wei’s work is among Wiley’s most widely read papers, ranking within the top 10% published by the journal in 2024. He was recognized with a certificate on behalf of the British Division of The International Academy of Pathology.
The work outlines best practices and guidance for achieving consensus in human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), an important biomarker in breast cancer, in immunohistochemistry scoring for breast cancer.
Wei joined the UAB Department of Pathology in 2004 as a resident. He joined the faculty in 2009 as assistant professor and quickly rose to the rank of tenured professor in 2016. He served as section head of surgical pathology in 2015 and became associate division director of anatomic pathology in 2019. Wei joined the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Kansas Medical Center in 2021, where he was named the Barbara F. Atkinson Endowed Professor and Director of Translational Research. He returned to the UAB Department of Pathology as director of the Division of Women’s Health in 2024 and as section head for bone and soft tissue pathology. In 2025, Wei was named the Hazel Gore, M.B.B.S., Endowed Professor in Women’s Health in the Department of Pathology.
