(l-r) Drs. Mackinnon, Morlote, Singh, and ChandrashekarThe Department of Pathology is home to the Pathology Learning Resource, a web-based educational portal developed by the Division of Genomic Diagnostics and Bioinformatics. This platform houses an expanding collection of high-quality educational videos designed to support training and professional development in modern pathology practice. While the platform itself is available for UAB faculty, staff, and trainees, its videos have recently been shared to YouTube for public access.
The resource offers a broad spectrum of topics, including foundational concepts in molecular pathology, detailed overviews of molecular assays, core principles of pathology informatics, and introductions to next-generation sequencing technologies and bioinformatics. The library includes notable molecular cases encountered during clinical service, providing valuable real-world learning opportunities. The video library features contributions from division faculty, staff, and trainees.
“These videos have become an important educational tool for incoming residents, particularly those in their molecular rotation, helping to accelerate their training and deepen their understanding,” said Alexander “Craig” Mackinnon, M.D., Ph.D., Robert B. Adams Endowed Professor, Executive Vice Chair, and Division Director, Genomic Diagnostics and Bioinformatics.
As part of a broader educational initiative in the department, trainees who have contributed molecular cases to the video library will be highlighted on UAB Pathology social media channels in a campaign showcasing molecular cases of the month.
“A key contributor to this effort has been Bade Iriabho, our system administrator, who has led the design, implementation, and maintenance of the web portal and its infrastructure,” said Darshan Shimoga Chandreshekar, M.Sc., Ph.D., Informatics Section Head.
“As a dynamic and continuously evolving platform, the Pathology Learning Resource plays a vital role in advancing education, fostering collaboration, and promoting innovation within the department,” said Mackinnon.
