Kenneth Long, M.D., Ph.D., a PGY5 training in the Division of Infectious Diseases, American Board of Internal Medicine research trainee and postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Sixto M. Leal Jr. M.D., Ph.D., received first place for his poster presentation titled “Documentation of Candidemia Risk Factors for T2 Ordering: A Diagnostic Stewardship Intervention.” He is the recipient of the J. Claude Bennett Award for Excellence in Research by an Associate Fellow of the Department of Medicine.

Chiamaka Umah, M.D., physician-scientist trainee, PGY3, received first place for her poster presentation titled “Near Real-Time Isolate Whole Genome Sequencing to Investigate Suspected Nosocomial Transmission: Insights from a “Serratia Marcescens” Outbreak.” She is the recipient of the Thomas N. James Award for Excellence in Research by a Resident of the Department of Medicine.

The symposium brings together emerging scientists and scholars from across the institution to showcase their original research. All trainees within the Department of Medicine were invited to submit abstracts highlighting their basic, clinical or population-based investigations.

Accepted abstracts were featured in a poster session following the keynote lecture, offering trainees the opportunity to present their work to faculty, peers and invited judges. Posters were judged on three major criteria: scientific merit, presentation and communication skills and evidence that the trainee understands their work and played a major role in obtaining the data.
