Lourdes Corman, M.D., professor and director of the Division of Internal Medicine at the UAB School of Medicine’s Huntsville Regional Medical Campus, received the 2015 Laureate Award from the Alabama Chapter of the American College of Physicians, the national organization of internists.The Laureate Award honors Fellows and Masters of the ACP who have demonstrated commitment to excellence in medical care, education or research and in service to their community, their chapter and the ACP. Corman, a decades-long member of the ACP, was presented the honor at the ACP annual meeting in June.
Corman earned her medical degree in 1970 from the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania (now the Drexel University College of Medicine). She completed an internship and residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in infectious diseases at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, as well as a rheumatology fellowship at the University of Missouri.
Corman has held faculty positions at the University of Missouri, the University of California Davis, University of Florida College of Medicine and the University of Louisville before joining the Huntsville Regional Medical Campus in 1999.
The American College of Physicians is the largest medical specialty organization and the second-largest physician group in the United States. ACP members include 141,000 internal medicine physicians (internists), related subspecialists and medical students. Internal medicine physicians are specialists who apply scientific knowledge and clinical expertise to the diagnosis, treatment and compassionate care of adults across the spectrum from health to complex illness.
