Equal Access Birmingham will host its second annual Heart + Sole 5K/Fun Run on Saturday, Aug. 29, to raise funds for the School of Medicine student-run free clinic, which provides education and health care to Birmingham’s uninsured and underserved.
The Heart + Sole 5K/Fun Run — a family-friendly event open to participants of all ages — will begin at 7:30 a.m. for children ages 3-8. The 5K will begin at 8 a.m. on the UAB Campus Green. Advance registration is $25 per person for the 5K and $15 per child for the fun run. Registration cost includes a T-shirt. On-site registration, beginning at 6:30 a.m. Aug. 29, is $30 (cash only) for the 5K.
This year for some competitive fun, individuals can also register as part of a team representing departments within the UAB School of Medicine and UAB Hospital. The department team with the most participation will be awarded a prize.
EAB was created in 2005 to both improve healthcare access for underserved populations in the Birmingham area and provide UAB medical students with service learning experiences. Student volunteers see approximately 400 patients per year at the EAB Clinic at the Church of the Reconciler, which opened in downtown Birmingham in November 2012.
