The UAB School of Medicine recently kicked off its Season of Service, a way for employees and faculty to make a difference in the lives of others during the holiday season and beyond.
The Season of Service began November 24 and will run through Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday on January 19, 2015. Faculty and staff are encouraged during this time to give back through service projects and donations to organizations they find meaningful.
"The Season of Service is an opportunity for the Dean's Office and the School of Medicine to demonstrate our concern and compassion for others in the Birmingham area by giving back broadly to our community," said Selwyn M. Vickers, MD, senior vice president of medicine and dean of the UAB School of Medicine.
Some ideas for giving include donating coats, blankets, and clothing to homeless shelters and non-perishable grocery items to local food banks; serving or delivering meals; collecting toys or clothing for children in need; and donating time or other resources to an animal shelter.
If you want to get involved but aren't sure where to start, a partial list of local organizations is featured on the UAB Benevolent Fund website.
