Roger Smalligan, M.D., MPH, regional dean of the Huntsville Regional Medical Campus, has been honored with the 2024 Alabama Chapter American College of Physicians (ACP) Laureate Award. The award recognizes his commitment and contributions to internal medicine, leadership, and patient care.
As a native of El Paso, Texas, Smalligan witnessed disparities firsthand, motivating him to pursue a career in medicine. His goal was to serve the underserved, and he has achieved this through his work as a physician and educator, spending a number of years in Ecuador, Tennessee, and Texas prior to his most recent seven years at UAB. Smalligan's commitment to advancing medical education, research, and community health has left an indelible mark on the field.
“I was surprised and delighted to receive the Alabama ACP Laureate Award,” said Smalligan. “To be named in company with incredible UAB Heersink faculty members who have won this award previously is incredibly humbling and gratifying. I hope to represent UAB well on the state and national level of the ACP going forward.”
The Laureate Award is presented annually to exceptional physicians who exemplify the highest standards of professionalism, ethics, and clinical expertise. Smalligan joins the list of UAB faculty previously honored with the award, including Michael Saag, M.D., 2022; Lisa Willett, M.D., 2021; Verna Bittner, M.D., 2019; Seth Landefeld, M.D., 2016; Lourdes Corman, M.D., 2015; Anupam Agarwal, M.D., 2014; and more.
The Laureate Award was announced during the combined Alabama / Mississippi Annual ACP meeting, which was held from May 31 to June 2, 2024, at the Hotel Effie Sandestin in Miramar Beach, Florida.
