Jennifer McCain, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics, has been awarded the junior faculty 2023 Dean’s Excellence Award for Service.
McCain attended medical school at the Medical College of Georgia and completed her pediatric residency and pediatric emergency medicine fellowship training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
After completing training, McCain has worked as a pediatric emergency room physician and a community physician in the Birmingham area. Throughout her career she has always been an active participant and advocate for her patients and all children of Alabama.
For the past five years, she has been the co-chair of the Alabama Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Committee on Injury Prevention. She is an executive board member for the Alabama Chapter of the AAP.
She has been very active and committed to fighting the COVID-19 pandemic in Alabama. She serves on the scientific advisory subcommittee for the COVID-19 school testing grant with the Alabama Department of Health and UAB School of Public Health and as a committee chair for the Jefferson County Pediatric Society's COVID-19 response team.
Her commitment and hard work was recognized by the Alabama Chapter of the AAP with a special achievement award for leadership in standardizing local pediatric care during the pandemic and for developing algorithms for care of school children.
Another initiative that McCain is passionate about is safe sleep. She recently secured a AAP-sponsored, multicenter community partnership approaches for safe sleep (CPASS) grant which provides cribs and safe sleep education for high risk families in the community. In this role, she has created a partnership with Birmingham Healthy Start Plus and in the past few months has reached 200 families with education and safe sleep cribs.
“I am honored to have worked with Jennifer for the past 20 years and admire her commitment and passion to advocating for the children in our state,” said Kathy Monroe, M.D., division director of the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
