The Mary Heersink Institute for Global Health hosted guest seminar speaker Manuel Ramirez-Zea, M.D., Ph.D., head of the Research Center for the Prevention of Chronic Diseases and Department of Nutrition and Chronic Diseases at the Institute for Nutrition of Central America and Panama (INCAP) on Feb. 7, 2023.
INCAP, headquartered in Guatemala City, is the leading institution in population research and training in Central America, and its original nutrition focus has evolved to prioritize chronic diseases and cancer. In this seminar, Ramirez-Zea provides an overview of INCAP's role in research and policy surrounding the evolution of nutritional and chronic health problems in the region.
Ramirez-Zea is a recipient of the Science and Technology Medal, the highest distinction awarded by the Guatemalan government to professionals who excel in scientific research and technology. He has implemented research projects on epidemiology and interventions for primary and secondary prevention of chronic diseases. His research covers additional areas such as behavioral change and healthy lifestyles, chronic liver disease, and cardiometabolic risk factors.
While focusing on Central America's efforts to combat chronic diseases and cancer in his presentation, Ramirez-Zea provides opportunities to share knowledge with researchers in other countries facing similar health issues.
