Matt Heimann, M.D.
Matt Heimann, M.D., has joined the Mary Heersink Institute for Global Health (MHIGH) as the associate director for Educational Programs, tasked with strengthening the educational mission of the institute.
“We are thrilled to have Dr. Heimann lead the educational programs at the MHIGH and thankful for the partnership with Dr. Elie and the Emergency Medicine Department,” said Alan T. N. Tita, M.D., Ph.D., associate dean for Global and Women’s Health and MHIGH director. “Dr. Heimann brings outstanding vision and enthusiasm to champion global health fellowships and diverse scholarly opportunities in the Heersink School of Medicine, including a Master of Science degree program in Global Health in partnership with the School of Public Health and other UAB and global partners.”
Heimann is a graduate of The Florida State University College of Medicine and completed his residency training in emergency medicine at UAB. He completed a global emergency medicine fellowship at UAB and earned his Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene through the prestigious Gorgas Tropical Medicine course. He is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine and the fellowship director for Global Emergency Medicine.
“I am thrilled to come onboard with this multidisciplinary team to expand innovative and learner-centric global health educational offerings for the institution and its collaborators,” said Heimann. “Thank you to my partners at MHIGH and my department chair who have entrusted me with this opportunity.”
Heimann’s department chair, Marie-Carmelle Elie, M.D., is excited to see him extend his skills in program development and teaching to a broader sphere.
“The opportunity to both engage and share knowledge and expertise beyond the borders of our region and nation is a privilege,” said Elie. “The collaborations that have stemmed from global networks have been transformative in creating global solutions in health care. Importantly, those relationships will continue to be critical in forecasting and mitigating the risks of future health crises.”
Heimann has been recognized for his skills in developing innovative and comprehensive international medicine educational programs.
