Soroush Rais-Bahrami, M.D., MBA, will serve as interim chair of the Department of Urology, effective Oct. 1, 2022.
Rais-Bahrami obtained his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He went on to complete his residency in urology at the Arthur Smith Institute for Urology and a fellowship in Urologic Oncology at the National Cancer Institute.
He joined the UAB Department of Urology in 2014, as well as the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB as a scientist in the Experimental Therapeutics Program. His research aims to improve prostate cancer detection by integrating image-guided biopsy into early prostate cancer screening. He is also investigating the role of advanced imaging technologies and novel PET tracers to improve the initial staging of various urologic cancers and developing novel biomarkers for better risk-stratification and treatment counseling of patients with urologic diseases, including those with variant histologies and recurrent disease states.
“I look forward to assuming this role with the goals of continuing the growth and exceptional excellence set forth in our UAB Department of Urology and throughout its history,” said Rais-Bahrami. “As a team, we will strive to lead our discipline by continuing to offer the most advanced urologic clinical care, forging ahead at the forefront of research in the field, and educating the next generation of outstanding urologic surgeons.”
After ten years of serving as the inaugural chair of the Department of Urology, Dean Assimos, M.D., will be stepping down on Oct. 1, 2022.
