Bruce Korf, M.D., Ph.D., and Anath Shalev, M.D., have been inducted into the Association of American Physicians (AAP), an honorary, elected society of America’s best physician-scientists who make the highest and most prestigious contributions to the advancement of medicine.
The AAP seeks to inspire physician-led research across all fields of science related to medicine and health and to build a community of physician-scientists in support of the principle that objective science and evidence are essential foundations for improving patient care and the health of Americans.
Anath Shalev, M.D.Shalev, a professor in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism and director of the UAB Comprehensive Diabetes Center, has over 29 years of experience in the field of diabetes research and in developing disease-changing therapy regimens. Her areas of study include the molecular biology of diabetes, beta cell biology, apoptosis, oxidative stress, transcriptional regulation of gene expression, and diabetes complications.
“The AAP has a long history of outstanding physician-scientists and I am truly honored to now be a part of this prestigious association,” said Shalev.
Bruce Korf, M.D., Ph.D.Korf, a professor with the Department of Genetics, Wayne H. and Sara Crews Finley Endowed Chair in Medical Genetics, associate dean for Genomic Medicine, chief genomics officer at UAB Medicine, and co-director of the UAB-HudsonAlpha Center for Genomic Medicine, has been at UAB since 2003. He is a board-certified medical geneticist, pediatrician, and child neurologist and specializes in genetics, the treatment of neurofibromatosis, and the integration of genomics into medical practice.
“The Association of American Physicians has been in existence for well more than a century, spanning essentially the entire era of modern medical science. It is a great honor to have been elected and to have the opportunity to help promote the importance of basic and translational research in the practice of medicine,” said Korf.
