Roger Smalligan, M.D., MPH, regional dean for the UAB Heersink School of Medicine Huntsville Regional Medical Campus, was recently installed as president of the Madison County Medical Society.
Smalligan, a professor and internal medicine physician, has led the Huntsville Regional Medical Campus since January 2017. He also serves as CEO of the Valley Foundation, the practice plan for faculty physicians at the Huntsville campus.
"Given my role in medical education, my focus this year as president of the Madison County Medical Society is on preparing and inspiring the next generation of physicians,” Smalligan said. “Many of my colleagues are already engaged in this important work, and I’d like to harness their efforts in an intentional way that highlights this outstanding group of physician leaders and helps us train more outstanding doctors for the citizens of North Alabama.”
The Madison County Medical Society is a professional organization chartered in 1877, comprised of physicians across Madison County Alabama. The MCMS is organized “to serve the community, advocate for the physician patient relationship; and preserve the highest standards of professional, educational and moral conduct.” The Society acts as liaison between the medical community, the lay community, the Medical Association of the State of Alabama and the American Medical Association.
In addition to undergraduate training for third- and fourth year medical students, the Huntsville Regional Medical Campus is home to both the UAB Huntsville Family Medicine and Internal Medicine Residency programs, as well as the Rural Medicine Program, a medical student training program aimed to develop physicians with the skills necessary to practice effectively in rural areas and small towns.
