Patrice Knight, M.D., longtime regional chair of Pediatrics at the UAB Heersink School of Medicine Huntsville Regional Medical Campus, passed away Feb. 2, 2022.
Knight retired from the Huntsville Regional Medical Campus in 2020 after 35 years of service as the campus’ regional chair of Pediatrics. She was an alumna of the Heersink School of Medicine and the UAB Pediatrics Residency Program.
“Dr. Knight was an incredible person, pediatrician, leader and educator for UAB medical students and residents. She was such a kind, compassionate, caring and giving person who set a beautiful example for all of us in medicine,” said Roger Smalligan, M.D., MPH, regional dean of the Huntsville campus. “On a personal note, her warm and honest way of telling me about the campus here was a big influence on my decision to come to UAB, and I will always remember her kindness and support. She will be greatly missed in our community, and our most sincere condolences are sent to the family.”
A New Jersey native and graduate of Huntsville’s Butler High School, Knight pursued her lifelong dream of becoming a pediatrician by completing her undergraduate work at Auburn University and earning her medical degree from the Heersink School of Medicine in 1980.
After finishing her pediatrics residency in Birmingham, Knight returned to Huntsville where she completed a neonatology fellowship. She served the Huntsville community practicing pediatrics and neonatal intensive care at Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children and as an associate professor at the Huntsville Campus.
A visitation is planned for Saturday, Feb. 12 in Huntsville. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Melissa George Neonatal Memorial Fund through the Huntsville Hospital Foundation.
