UAB School of Medicine MS4 student, Hannah Cutshall, will hold the Tommy Trot 5K in memory of her grandfather on Sept. 25, 2021, at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, Ala.
Hannah Cutshall is applying to Pathology residencies this year and is currently participating in the newly created UAB Pathology Integrated Residency. This unique program exposes a prospective Pathology resident with an integrated and immersive experience focused on knowledge and skills necessary for entering Pathology as a career.
Hannah is from East Tennessee and had a close relationship with her grandfather, Tommy Cutshall, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2001. He was treated in various hospitals throughout the East Tennessee region, and after a relapse in 2009, he participated in a clinical trial treatment at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2010.
“It was very difficult to see him change from the strong man who took care of his paralyzed wife to being the one who needed taken care of himself,” Hannah said when asked what it was like to walk with her grandfather during this time.
Mr. Cutshall passed away in 2015, and Hannah hopes to honor his memory through the Tommy Trot 5K. Initially, the run was to be held on the fifth anniversary of his passing in 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it will now be on the sixth anniversary.
“I am a runner, so running has always been a good outlet for me. He always loved to come and cheer at my races, even when he was at his sickest. I thought a race would be a good way to honor his memory and continue a sport he always supported me in,” Hannah said.
The race will benefit ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer, a national nonprofit organization that conducts prostate cancer research and provides financial, educational, and emotional support for prostate cancer patients.
“I thought their mission goals best fit with what I was hoping to promote with both prostate cancer research and support for prostate cancer patients,” Hannah said about choosing to benefit ZERO with this race.
Hannah hopes to honor her grandfather, support prostate cancer patients and research, and promote overall health with the Tommy Trot 5K.
“My goal for this race was to raise money for supporting patient families and prostate cancer research, as well as raise awareness for prostate cancer in general. I am hoping to also inspire health through getting outdoors and exercising with this [5K] on a beautiful course along the lake at Oak Mountain,” Hannah said.
