“Dreams of Hope,” an inspiring program that celebrates the unifying power of music, premiered Thursday, Feb. 6, at the Alabama Theatre. The concert-documentary, co-hosted by Selwyn Vickers, M.D., FACS, senior vice president of UAB Medicine and dean of the School of Medicine, and Jeffrey Bayer, president of Bayer Ventures, was a successful sold out show. Directed by filmmaker David Macon and Henry Panion III, Ph.D., university professor in the College of Arts and Sciences Department of Music, the “Dreams of Hope” showing was planned to coincide with Black History Month. At the event, Vickers and Bayer announced a new initiative: the Birmingham Coalition for Human Rights. The Birmingham Coalition for Human Rights will bring together organizations and leaders who will partner on city-wide advocacy efforts as they work to change the perception of Birmingham. The new coalition will be a vehicle for UAB to partner with organizations in Birmingham who are creating a fresh narrative about the city. The coalition will emphasize the depth of creativity in our community through avenues such as musical and theatrical arts.
“Dreams of Hope” will air on Alabama Public Television Sunday, February 23, at 12:00 a.m. “Dreams of Hope” is a beautiful representation of what can happen when people from different cultures and backgrounds come together for a common cause.
