“Dreams of Hope,” an inspiring program that celebrates the unifying power of music, will air on public television stations across the country in February. The concert documentary, directed by filmmaker David Macon and Henry Panion III, Ph.D., university professor in the College of Arts and Sciences Department of Music, will coincide with Black History Month and celebrate social justice. The national broadcast is sponsored by UAB Medicine. Co-hosted by Selwyn Vickers, M.D., FACS, senior vice president of UAB Medicine and dean of the School of Medicine, and Jeffrey Bayer, president of Bayer Ventures, the “Dreams of Hope” premiere is planned for Thursday, Feb. 6 at the Alabama Theatre. At the "Dreams of Hope" event, Vickers and Bayer will announce a new initiative: the Birmingham Coalition for Human Rights. Alongside Jeffrey and Gail Bayer’s Instruments of Hope Unity Fund, the Birmingham Coalition for Human Rights will seek to bring positive change to Birmingham by advocating for human rights. Vickers’ vision is that the new coalition will be a vehicle for the UAB SOM to partner with the broad human and civil rights constituency to create a fresh narrative about Birmingham, and to bring together and support organizations and leaders who will partner on advocacy efforts across the city. The coalition will emphasize the depth of creativity in our community through avenues such as musical and theatrical arts.
