The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) has partnered with organizations across the state to develop the Alabama HPV Vaccination Coalition, with the goal to address barriers and improve human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination rates in Alabama.
The HPV vaccine, recommended for boys and girls ages 11 to 12, is used for cancer prevention. If children are vaccinated prior to being exposed to the virus, their risk of getting HPV-related cancers later in life dramatically decreases.
Through a grant from the National Cancer Institute, the UAB CCC implemented a comprehensive assessment to identify needs and assets associated with HPV vaccination uptake in Alabama. This included interviewing pediatricians, nursing staff, parents, and other stakeholders in various clinics statewide.
