William A. Curry, M.D., MACP, has been elected Governor of the Alabama Chapter of the American College of Physicians, the national organization of internists. Beginning at the ACP annual meeting in New Orleans, April 19-21, 2018, Curry will serve a year as Governor-elect, after which he will succeed UAB colleague Gustavo R. Heudebert, M.D., MACP, in the role.Curry is a professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine, and associate dean for primary care and rural medicine. He also serves as senior vice president for population health for UAB Health System.
Curry brings a wealth of medical leadership to the ACP-Alabama Chapter governorship. He previously served as associate dean of the Tuscaloosa Regional Medical Campus at UAB, as president of the State Medical Association, and as a member of the State Committee of Public Health and Board of Medical Examiners. In addition to his current duties as an attending physician at the Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center and UAB Hospital, Curry actively engages in scholarly medical pursuits—teaching medical humanism and professionalism, redesigning clinical practice, and advancing population health.
Governors are elected by local ACP members and serve four-year terms. Working with a local council, they supervise ACP chapter activities, appoint members to local committees and preside at regional meetings. They also represent members by serving on the ACP Board of Governors.
The American College of Physicians is the largest medical specialty organization and the second-largest physician group in the United States. ACP members include 152,000 internal medicine physicians (internists), related subspecialists and medical students. Internal medicine physicians are specialists who apply scientific knowledge and clinical expertise to the diagnosis, treatment and compassionate care of adults across the spectrum from health to complex illness.
