Thomas Staner, M.D., UAB NeurosurgeryThe University of Alabama at Birmingham has opened a new neurosurgery clinic along the Highway 280 corridor. The UAB Medicine Neurosurgery Clinic at Greystone is designed to evaluate and treat conditions of the brain and spine.
The clinic is staffed by Thomas Staner, M.D., an eminent Birmingham physician who joined the faculty of UAB this year. Staner is board-certified in both neurology and neurosurgery and has more than 40 years of neurological experience. Staner, and nurse practitioner Shannon Hall, CRNP, can provide diagnosis, triage, treatment and pre-operative evaluation for a variety of conditions, including spinal cord disorders, brain or spine tumors, and carpal tunnel syndrome. He has a special focus on complex spine disorders, as well as on conditions such as stenosis and spondylolisthesis.

Staner earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Loyola University in Chicago, and graduated from Loyola Medical School in 1969. He completed an internship at Northwestern University in Chicago and was the first solely surgical intern at that facility. Staner went on to complete a neurology residency at the University of Iowa. He then did a neurosurgery residency at the University of Wisconsin.
Between specialty trainings, he was a neurologist with the U.S. Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Va. Staner began practicing in the Birmingham area in 1979, and was the first to use the operating microscope for all neurosurgical procedures in Alabama. He has practiced minimally invasive surgical techniques for many years.
