Caroline Harada, M.D., assistant dean for Community Engaged Scholarship in the School of Medicine, has been named to the newest class of Faculty Fellows in Engaged Scholarship, a yearlong program that seeks to strengthen service-learning opportunities at UAB.Such opportunities enable faculty, students and community partners to collaborate on projects that extend student learning, provide volunteer help for community endeavors and advance UAB’s mission to support and improve the community.
The program, entering its fourth year, is structured around a series of interactive workshops exploring theories, implementation strategies, assessment and the integration of service-learning across disciplines. Upon completion, each fellow will receive a $1,500 grant to support course development.
In her role within the School of Medicine, Harada oversees the Learning Communities and the Office of Service Learning (OSL). The OSL works to enhance students’ learning experience by integrating authentic service to the community , accompanied by instruction and reflection, into existing courses in the medical school curriculum.
