The UAB Department of Microbiology and the Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) hosted the inaugural HIV Basic and Translational Research Symposium Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2024, at the UAB Hilton Hotel. The all-day event featured speakers from the university and Southern Research, time for discussion, and a poster session.  

S.M. Qasim Hussaini, M.D., assistant professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology and health systems researcher at the O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, is the latest winner of the Heersink School of Medicine’s Featured Discovery. This honor acknowledges and celebrates the important research made by Heersink’s faculty members. 
John Osborne, Ph.D., assistant professor of Medicine at the Informatics Institute, recently received a notice of award for a U24 supplement to develop a cancer algorithm predicting the severity of cancer recurrence in patients. The work will build on previously funded work to identify recurrence retrospectively in UAB cancer patients using structured EHR data and clinical text.

Rui Lu, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Medicine's Division of Hematology and Oncology, is the 2023 junior faculty winner of the Dean's Excellence Award in Research.

Erica Stringer-Reasor, M.D., associate professor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology, is the senior faculty winner of the Dean's Excellence Award in Diversity Enhancement.

Jill Hancock, clinical research coordinator in the Lifespan Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center, found a connection to the local community in a unique way after moving to Birmingham from Louisiana—by volunteering at the Greater Birmingham Humane Society.
