Explore UAB

The UAB Department of Neurosurgery offers a variety of educational opportunities for medical students interested in exploring the field of neurosurgery. Whether through observerships or sub-internships, students gain invaluable exposure, hands-on experience, and mentorship that can help shape their future careers.

We welcome students to join us in our clinical and academic environment, where they can learn firsthand about the depth and breadth of neurosurgery.

Observerships

Observerships provide an opportunity for medical students to shadow neurosurgeons and other medical staff, offering a firsthand look at the daily responsibilities and challenges in the field. This experience allows students to develop mentorship relationships, ask questions, and determine whether neurosurgery is the right career path for them.

Observerships are open to students from the Heersink School of Medicine as well as visiting medical students.

Sub-Internships

The UAB Department of Neurosurgery offers sub-internships for medical students interested in a career in neurosurgery.

This immersive experience provides students with hands-on training in managing both acute and chronic neurological conditions. Working alongside faculty and residents, sub-interns actively participate in patient care, develop essential clinical skills, and gain insight into the various neurosurgical subspecialties.

Sub-internships are open to students from the Heersink School of Medicine as well as visiting medical students.

Participation in educational opportunities does not guarantee an interview with the UAB Neurosurgical Residency Program.
