Curriculum

Our program is designed to train general internal medicine specialists and those who wish to pursue subspecialty training in a community-based, clinically oriented setting.

Our curriculum and didactic activities establish objectives, teaching methods and evaluation of clinical methods that prepare our residents to be successful clinicians, scientists and educators.

Timeline

Outpatient Medicine

Our program places an emphasis on outpatient training, with 8-10 weeks of dedicated continuity clinic each year, in addition to outpatient experiences in virtually every Internal Medicine subspecialty. This provides exemplary clinic training and allows residents to build a longitudinal patient panel, develop lasting relationships with their patients, and follow their care and health outcomes throughout their three years of residency.

General Medical Wards

Baptist Medical Center South is a Level 1 Trauma Center and a regional referral center serving patients throughout Central Alabama, providing residents with exposure to high-acuity and medically complex patients across a broad range of medical specialties. Along with the UAB Montgomery Regional Medical Campus, it provides a diverse set of learning opportunities for young physicians pursuing a career in primary care or one of the many Internal Medicine subspecialties.

Our residency has 2 inpatient ward teams. One team operates in the traditional model of 1 upper level and 2 interns and the other a hospital medicine with 2 upper-level residents, allowing for an opportunity to use increased autonomy to build efficiency and focus on higher level learning.

Summary of Schedule

• No overnight coverage outside of Night Float rotation

• Swing Resident: The swing resident rotation focuses on becoming more skilled at the process of admitting.

• Evening patients are admitted by the swing resident, which allows each resident on the ward to maintain a good work-life balance even while on the inpatient service.

• We have a dedicated night float service.

Intensive Care

On the MICU service at Baptist Medical Center South, under the supervision of Board-certified critical care physicians, you will become proficient in the comprehensive care of critically ill patients. You will achieve clinical competence in ventilator management, hemodynamic monitoring, management of pain and sedation, and nutrition of the critically ill patient. With at least 3 months in the MICU, there will be plenty of opportunities for practice and education on critical care procedures such as arterial lines, central venous lines, lumbar punctures, thoracentesis, paracentesis, and POCUS. You will also be educated on how to compassionately address end of life issues with patients and family members.
