The Graduate Medical Education (GME) Wellness Resource Center—the first of its kind in the Southeast—will support our trainees during their years in residency and fellowship by creating a dedicated space for them to decompress, collaborate, visit with their families, study and exercise.

This will help our residents and fellows feel more fulfilled in their roles as physicians, ease the impact of long shifts and high stress, and showcase the importance of camaraderie, team building and work-life balance

With a generous lead gift and space allocation from UAB Hospital, the UAB Heersink School of Medicine and the UA Health Services Foundation, we will see this space come to life for our residents and fellows next year.

Unique Features

Our center will house five specific zones to cater to trainees’ physical, mental and emotional needs and will be accessible 24/7.

  • Reception Zone, with a dedicated employee helping coordinate activities and monitor entry and exit from the center, ensuring only residents and their invited guests are in the space.
  • Hospitality Zone, a family friendly zone where residents and fellows can share a meal and connect with their spouses, loved ones and children. This zone will also have healthy meals at night for trainees who are on call.
  • Activity Zone and Mothers’ Room, gives trainees the opportunity to attend to their physical well-being while on call or on long shifts. There will be a treadmill and a space for yoga, pilates and other exercises. There will also be a designated mother’s room with lactation stations that provide equipment for pumping. It also has technology that gives them access to stay connected to their clinical cases, should they want to do so.
  • Quiet Study Zone, featuring sectioned-off space where residents can study for boards or research current cases during breaks. An on-site librarian skilled in medical research will be accessible to help research cases.
  • Multipurpose Study and Meeting Zone, encouraging team-based learning, which is an effective way to learn and retain information. Residents will have access to computer workstations and whiteboards for learning, and professional groups can meet.

"We want to ensure that physicians remain in touch with why they initially chose medicine as a career. Issues like burnout not only affect the health of our workforce, but they also ultimately affect the health of our patients and our ability to care for them.”

Brenessa Lindeman, MD
Associate Designated Institutional Official for the Clinical Learning Environment

Location and Timeline

The new center will be centrally located in the West Pavilion of UAB Hospital.
