Volker Hall is a secure building that remains locked 24/7. Entrance to the building requires your UAB OneCard. If your OneCard is not working to access these parts of the building, contact Alex Johnson at avjohnso@uab.edu in MSS. 
 

Reserving space in Volker Hall

  • Room reservation requests can be submitted through the EMS system. You will log in using your BlazerID and password. 
  • If you are unable to see Volker Hall room options in EMS or encounter issues with access, please contact Kate Pugh at katepugh@uab.edu for assistance.

 

 


 

Atrium

  • The atrium serves as the front door to the building and is open for student study and relaxation.
  • Please do not touch or water the plants, they are cared for and maintained by a foliage company on a regular basis.
  • May be reserved for events at the review and approval by the Dept of Medical Education. Please submit event reservation requests through EMS and contact Kate Pugh at katepugh@uab.edu.

 


 

Medical Education Tower


Morning Grounds

  • This station is reserved for Heersink School of Medicine faculty, staff, and students within Volker Hall. The machines will be available for use 7 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Monday - Friday. It is monitored regularly for refilling needs.
  • Please use the QR code posted at the coffee bar or contact Kate Pugh at katepugh@uab.edu if you encounter issues with the machines.

VH 302

  • This lecture room is reserved for curriculum lectures and events such as LC meetings, lunch and learns, and is open for reservation by other groups and departments across campus. Reservations for VH302 are subject to review and approval by the Dept of Medical Education.

Fourth and fifth floor spaces

  • The fourth and fifth floors of Volker Hall are a shared space for curriculum-related activities and student use. 
  • Badge access is required to take the stairs and elevators to either floor. To ensure the floor is safe and available for student use, please do not admit non-medical students to the floor. This includes family and friends who wish to visit or study in the spaces.
  • Priority reservation of group rooms will be given to curricular activities (small groups, learning communities, etc.), student orgs and lunch and learns. Otherwise, these spaces are available for student study and use. 
  • Note, group rooms on the fourth and fifth floors cannot be reserved for studying. They may only be reserved for meetings and sessions like MSS large groups, learning communities, lunch and learns, etc. Students who wish to use the space for studying may do so, but the space must be shared, and cannot be reserved or “blocked off” by leaving personal belongings on tables, putting signs on the door, etc.
  • The kitchen, Keurig machines, and relaxation spaces are designed for student use. Students are expected to take care of the space, including cleaning up after use.

Sixth floor

  • The sixth floor of Volker Hall is a working floor and houses the Dept of Medical Education, Undergraduate Medical Education, Cell Developmental and Integrative Biology Faculty as well as limited shared space for curriculum-related activities and student use. 
  • The sixth floor kitchen area is designated for Medical Education faculty and staff usage only.
  • The phone booths on the sixth floor are reserved for faculty and staff use only.
  • The floor is inaccessible to students from 6:00pm – 7:00am during the week and completely locked on weekends. 
  • Rooms 620, 621, and 622 are available for student reservation during business hours Monday-Friday. Please note that conference rooms 612 and 623 are reserved for faculty and staff use only and are not available for general booking.
  • Note, group rooms on the sixth floor cannot be reserved for studying. They may only be reserved for meetings and sessions like MSS large groups, learning communities, lunch and learns, etc. Students who wish to use the space for studying may do so, but the space must be shared, and cannot be reserved or “blocked off” by leaving personal belongings on tables, putting signs on the door, etc.

 


 

Lecture Tower


Lecture Halls

  • Volker Hall Lecture Halls are reserved for curriculum lectures and events. They are also available for use by other schools and departments throughout UAB. Reservations are reviewed and approved by the Dept of Medical Education.
  • Lecture halls are not to be used for Lunch and Learns.

The Pit

  • The Pit is an open lounge available for study and relaxation by all who utilize Volker Hall.
  • The Pit is available for reservation for student functions such as fundraisers, blood drives, etc. All events are subject to departmental approval.

1L109 Conference Room

  • The 1L109 Conference Room is available for reservation during business hours Monday-Friday. Reservations outside of normal operating hours are subject to Departmental approval.
  • Priority reservation of the conference room will be given to departmental meetings, curricular activities (small groups, learning communities, etc.), and student orgs.
  • Note, this conference room cannot be reserved for student studying.

Residency Interviews

  • All residency interview room reservations are made through MSS. Please contact Jessica Orcutt at jporcutt@uab.edu for assistance.
