Purpose

The Global Health Faculty Recruitment and Retention Program at MHIGH is intended to augment recruitment and retention packages for outstanding, highly funded, or promising faculty ranked at the Assistant Professor level or higher. In partnership with Heersink School of Medicine (HSOM) Departments, Centers, Institutes, and Divisions, these funds are intended to foster growth, innovation, and impact, as assessed proximally by increased extramural or other funding to UAB and by an increase in employees who are supported, in part or whole, by extramural resources. A specific goal of these resources is to increase the number of faculty engaged in funded global health across missions.


The Application Process

  1. What applications will be considered: Applications requesting co-funding for:

    1. Recruitment of new faculty, or

    2. Retention of outstanding, current faculty

      Faculty will be Assistant Professor or higher, have current extramural support, and/or demonstrate outstanding potential for future extramural funding or income generation.

      Exclusions:
      Applications that include support for the following will not be considered: improvement to infrastructure, such as construction, renovation, or remodeling of office space; or acquisition/installation of equipment.

  2. Applications should include:

    1. A request submitted by the Department Chair, Division Director or Center/Institute Director with a letter of support, summarizing applicant’s global health work, potential for success, co-investments, and plans for mentorship/career development.

    2. Curriculum vitae of the faculty member being recruited or retained.

    3. Vision statement by the faculty member describing their global health portfolio and plans for funding growth.

    4. Specify request for 1 to 3 years of support and a budget outline; funds to be utilized for salary support and research development.

  3. Funding allotments:

    1. Assistant Professor – up to $75,000 per year

    2. Associate Professor – up to $100,000 per year

    3. Professor – up to $125,000 per year


The Award Process

  1. Applications will be reviewed by MHIGH and the HSOM Dean’s Office and include interview(s).

  2. Award notification: The applying Department Chair will receive notice of the award from Dean’s office.

  3. Accounting requirements: The first year of funds will be deposited in a separate account. For questions and assistance with the establishment of accounts, contact SOM Finance at somfinance@uab.edu.


Post Award Requirements

  1. MHIGH Faculty Scholar: The awarded faculty member will be named an MHIGH Faculty Scholar and will engage in programmatic and operational support for the development of long-term, sustainable solutions to global health challenges through service, education and/or research activities and promoting collaboration with HSOM/MHIGH partners at UAB and globally. This will also entail regular meetings with MHIGH Leadership. Activities will include participation in MHIGH Seminar Series, Symposia and other events including giving presentations, and engaging in other global health Institute-wide activities.

  2. Reporting: An annual report prior to funding renewal is required for the use of these funds, including: 1) details of new extramural support to UAB, salary support for personnel paid by extramural awards, and/or revenues originating from the generation of intellectual property; and 2) summary of activities of the faculty scholar and global health impact. Any funds remaining after termination of the award period will be returned to MHIGH.
