DYLANA ADAMS, M.D.

DYLANA ADAMS, M.D.

HOMETOWN: White Plains, Alabama
UNDERGRADUATE: University of Alabama at Birmingham
MEDICAL SCHOOL: UAB Heersink School of Medicine
BIO: I grew up in a little town called White Plains, Alabama. I came to UAB right after high school for undergrad, and I loved it so much I stayed for medical school and residency! I started medical school as a single mom to my son, Ax, and was fortunate to meet my husband, Taylor, right after my first year. We have since welcomed a baby girl named AJ and a goldendoodle named Ace into our family. As a medical student at UAB, I was impressed by the acuity of the patients in the ED, but it wasn’t until I was on the interview trail that I truly appreciated how much we get to see (and do) in this department. Not only are the patients high acuity, but we are allowed early autonomy (and we have Dragon), which was something I was looking for in a residency program. When I am not at work, you will find me going on family adventures, playing golf, watching Braves baseball, or cheering on my son’s little league teams.

HOMETOWN: Naples, FL
UNDERGRADUATE: University of Florida
MEDICAL SCHOOL: Florida State University
BIO: I grew up next to the beach in Naples, FL with two younger sisters. My mom was an ICU nurse and hearing her stories about the hospital first made me interested in medicine. In college, I studied exercise physiology at the University of Florida while working as a lifeguard. I spent my gap year as a scribe in the Emergency Department and then ventured into enemy territory at Florida State University for medical school. I knew I wanted to stay in the southeast for residency and, after my interview at UAB, I knew it was where I wanted to be. Everyone I met was so down to earth and the faculty seemed truly invested in the success of their residents. Also, the diversity and acuity of patients here is hard to beat. I moved to Birmingham with my boyfriend and our 5-year-old black lab, Guy. I am so excited to learn from the amazing patients, faculty, and my coresidents at UAB.

ERIC DEGEARE, M.D.

HOMETOWN: San Antonio, TX
UNDERGRADUATE: University of Louisville
MEDICAL SCHOOL: University of Louisville
BIO: I was born in San Antonio, TX and have also lived in Michigan and Mississippi but grew up in Louisville, KY and consider it my hometown. I attended the University of Louisville for both undergrad and medical school (Go Cards!). During my undergraduate years, I worked as a medical scribe in the emergency department and quickly fell in love with EM. I was drawn to UAB for residency due to the amazing faculty leadership, resident camaraderie, mentorship, and high acuity of the patient population treated here. My wife, Lydia, and I have enjoyed Birmingham so far and look forward to exploring what the city has to offer over the next three years! My interests within EM include resuscitation, toxicology, and wilderness medicine. When not in the hospital, you can find me playing basketball, hiking, traveling, at the gym, or watching/attending sporting events.

ANTHONY DINA, M.D.

HOMETOWN: Naples, Florida
UNDERGRADUATE: Florida State University
MEDICAL SCHOOL: Florida State University
BIO: I grew up in Naples, Florida with two younger brothers. I come from an engineering family, so I broke the model when I decided to pursue medicine. In college, I studied biology at Florida State University and got my EMT certification my sophomore year. I spent the next three years -including a gap year- working in the emergency department and I fell in love with Emergency Medicine. Having already attended the greatest college in Florida for undergrad, it only made sense to stay for medical school. When the time came to apply for residencies, Alabama was not even on my radar. But a fortuitous away rotation at UAB changed that. The critical care experience, relatable residents, and attending teaching styles all resonated with what I wanted out of residency and I am so excited to be here! When I am not on shift, you can catch me playing dungeons and dragons, at the gym, hammocking with a good book, or tearing up the dance floor. As far as Emergency Medicine goes, my interests are resuscitation, critical care medicine, and medical education.

HOMETOWN: Bessemer, AL
UNDERGRADUATE: University of Alabama
MEDICAL SCHOOL: Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine
BIO: I was born and raised in Bessemer, AL, a small town just outside of Birmingham. Even though I’ve never lived outside of Alabama I have been away from home for about 10 years. I attended The University of Alabama for my Undergraduate and Graduate Degrees where I received a Bachelor’s of Science in Human Development and a Master’s of Science in Rural and Community Health. I then attended the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine for Medical School. I was a scribe in the emergency department while I was in college so I knew pretty early on I wanted to go into Emergency Medicine, and going through my clinical rotations only solidified that notion. Being from Birmingham, I’ve always seen UAB as a huge staple in medicine and I never imagined I’d be able to train here, but with a good support system and hard work you can do anything! When I’m not at work I’m likely spending time with my Husband, Troy, and our puppy dog Leo, working out at a Pure Barre Studio, getting brunch with my girlfriends, or restarting Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, Gossip Girl or Hart of Dixie for the hundredth time.
ALICIA HEREFORD, M.D.

ALICIA HEREFORD, M.D.

HOMETOWN: Huntsville, AL
UNDERGRADUATE: Auburn University
MEDICAL SCHOOL: University of South Alabama
BIO: I was born and raised in the Rocket City, Huntsville, AL, although a ton of time was spent in Birmingham playing soccer for BUSA during my high school years. I attended Auburn University (War Eagle!) and graduated with a degree in Agronomy and Soils. After heading back home to work on the family farm, it became apparent that I wanted to pursue an entirely different career path. After a stint of shadowing and an internship in the HudsonAlpha research lab, I decided to pursue a career in medicine. I attended the University of South Alabama COM with the added perks of an almost year-round warm climate, beautiful Gulf Coast beaches, and Mardi Gras festivities. Leaning toward an out-of-state residency program, I quickly changed my mind after interviewing with UAB EM. They had everything I wanted in a program – camaraderie between both residents and faculty, incredible leadership, high acuity, and early autonomy. I’m excited and grateful to be a part of this amazing team and looking forward to the training that will equip me to be an excellent physician!
ANDREW HUBBS, M.D.

ANDREW HUBBS, M.D.

HOMETOWN: Louisville, KY
UNDERGRADUATE: Bellarmine University
MEDICAL SCHOOL: University of Louisville
BIO: Before interview season, I knew Alabama as nothing more than the longest part of the drive on my way to a Florida vacation. After visiting Birmingham for a 2nd look, I knew immediately that I wanted to be a part of the UAB community…and I am sure glad that I am now! I was born and raised in Louisville, KY. For undergraduate studies, I attended Bellarmine University, which is a small, liberal arts college. I then went on to medical school at the University of Louisville, former home of Lamar Jackson and Teddy Bridgewater for the football fans out there. That is where I met my sweet significant other, Allie. Allie and I went through the Couples Match process and were fortunate enough to have both landed at UAB and we couldn’t be any happier. I loved the city of Birmingham when I visited, but the main reason I knew this was the place for me was the people. Everyone at UAB is extremely intelligent, down to earth, kind, and easy to talk to. It really does make a difference being in such a fun and welcoming work environment. Additionally, it’s tough to beat the training at UAB between the high acuity, high volume, and variety of pathology that we see. People from all over the state come to UAB for their care and are extremely grateful, which is something I noticed almost immediately. A few more things about me: I enjoy exploring breweries, pub trivia, playing mediocre golf, tailgating, movies, and home improvement projects which is a newfound love. Lastly, try the Back Forty Burger.

PAUL KIRBY, M.D.

HOMETOWN: Goodlettsville, Tennessee
UNDERGRADUATE: Carson Newman University
MEDICAL SCHOOL: ETSU Quillen College of Medicine
BIO: I was raised in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, just north of Nashville. After attending undergrad at Columbia State Community College and Carson Newman University, I went to ETSU Quillen College of Medicine for medical school. I’m married to my high school sweetheart and we have an awesome dog named Oakley. I fell in love with emergency medicine because of the opportunity to treat people in the time they are most vulnerable and in need of help. The coordination of care in an emergency department is pivotal to provide patients the best. On the good days and the bad, there is no place I’d rather be than in the department along side my colleagues. Following my rotation here at UAB during my fourth year of medical school, I knew this was my home. I desired an academic program that pushed me and allowed me to learn from the very best both inside and outside of the department. When I’m not at work, I’m usually golfing, working out, watching sports, or going with my wife to explore birmingham and find a new favorite brewery or restaurant.
JACOB LAWING, M.D.

JACOB LAWING, M.D.

HOMETOWN: Marietta, GA
UNDERGRADUATE: University of Georgia
MEDICAL SCHOOL: Medical College of Georgia
BIO: I am originally from Marietta, GA but spent most of my childhood in South Florida just outside of Ft. Lauderdale. After high school, I moved back to Georgia for my undergraduate degree at UGA (Go Dawgs!) and it was there where I met my wife, Lindsey. I took a couple of gap years working as a medical scribe before starting medical school at MCG in Athens. I had already been interested in UAB after working with some alumni as a scribe, but my fourth-year rotation really solidified Birmingham as my top choice. It was difficult to beat the atmosphere of the department and the high-acuity patient population. I was especially impressed by how well the interns were handling the department just months after starting residency, and I knew I wanted to go to a program that equipped its residents that well. In addition to that, the city of Birmingham is loaded with cool trails, music venues, and restaurants. My wife and I are so excited to be at UAB and have this city to explore for the next three years!
TYLER SULLIVAN, M.D.

TYLER SULLIVAN, M.D.

HOMETOWN: Louisville, Mississippi
UNDERGRADUATE: Delta State University
MEDICAL SCHOOL: University of Mississippi Medical Center
BIO: I grew up in the small town of Louisville, Mississippi. I attended Delta State University where I took a few biology and chemistry classes, but mostly just played football. After graduation and an abysmal first attempt at the MCAT, I moved up to Washington, D.C. and worked on Capitol Hill before returning to Mississippi to work in conservation and government relations. I met a girl named Chrissy (in a gym of all places) who would later become my wife, and got a chance to go back to medical school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Chrissy and I got married the summer after my first year of medical school, and since then, we welcomed our son Ty into the world and added a golden retriever named Bear to the family. The Sullivan family is thrilled to be a part of the UABEM family. We felt that this program and the city of Birmingham offered us the best opportunity to grow together, and for me to become the best physician I can be. It was an opportunity we honestly were not expecting, but after interview day, the second look, and getting to know the program, we could not pass up the chance to be a part of something this special. My first few shifts in the department have certainly solidified what I already knew to be true of the program; that this is a place of excellence in emergency medicine, and every person here is the best at what they do. I am honored to be a part of UABEM. When I’m not in the department, you can find the Sullivan’s at a coffee shop, brewery, gym, the Taco Morro Loco truck, or out on our back deck enjoying the sunshine.

DEVON WADE, M.D.

HOMETOWN: Johnson City, TN
UNDERGRADUATE: Nashville
MEDICAL SCHOOL: Memphis
BIO: I grew up in Johnson City, TN (like the song Wagon Wheel) and met my wife, Heather, at college in Nashville. We lived in Memphis for the first part of Med school and then moved to Chattanooga for the last two years. We have two goofy dogs, Cooper and Moose. They have us trained very well. When I’m not at the hospital you’ll find me grabbing a beer with friends, hiking, rock climbing, being anywhere near water, or working on my family’s cattle farm. I’ve loved my time in Birmingham. Lots of good food, breweries, mountain bike trails, and great people. The experience in the ED at UAB is second to none. Extremely high acuity and great trauma experience. My co-residents are fantastic and the attendings really love to teach and develop you as a physician. My EM interests include Ultrasound, Addiction Medicine, Wilderness Medicine, and ED pain management.
