Rizk DSC 0465 webDana Rizk, MD (Associate Professor, Nephrology) led research efforts that were published in an article entitled “A Novel Method for Rapid Bedside Measurement of Glomerular Filtration Rate,” that was printed in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. The new injectable biomarker will potentially allow early detection of kidney damage and possible new therapies.

More Good News for June 27, 2018

We are excited to announce Douglas R. Morgan, MD, MPH, as our next Director of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. A global leader in gastric cancer and its prevention, Dr. Morgan is currently Associate Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University, where he practices and teaches consultative gastroenterology. He will succeed Mel Wilcox, MD, MSPH, who has served in this role since 2001.

The Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Residency Program officially welcomed 45 incoming interns at the Annual Welcome Picnic at Aldridge Gardens on Monday, June 18. The Department looks forward to getting to know this dynamic group of trainees!

Jasvinder Singh, MD, MPH (Professor, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology) recently received an award from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute for a project entitled “Implementing an Individualized Lupus Nephritis Patient Decision-Aid for Immunosuppressive Drugs.” The purpose of this project is to implement a computerized tool to help patients with lupus nephritis and their healthcare providers make personalized, culturally appropriate treatment plans. Great work, Dr. Singh!

Need a Peer Mentor? The DOM Early Career Peer Mentoring Group partners junior faculty members with experienced peers to help them navigate the unfamiliar territory of an early stage academic career. The group’s mission is to help with logistics, academic and NIH expectations, advice on grant resources and more through an ongoing formal peer relationship. Navin Nanda, MD, DSc (Distinguished Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Bulgarian Foundation of Cardiovascular Imaging and the Bulgarian Working Group on Cardiovascular Imaging for his phenomenal accomplishments in all aspects of adult, pediatric and fetal echocardiography. The award was presented to Dr. Nanda during the XXIV World Congress on Echocardiography and Cardiovascular Imaging. Congratulations, Dr. Nanda!

An article co-authored by Sejong Bae, PhD (Professor, Preventive Medicine) entitled “Disparities in Oral Health by Immigration Status in the United States” is featured on the cover of the June 2018 issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association. In this publication, investigators explore differences in oral health status between immigrants and U.S. citizens.
