The Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine hosted its annual picnic at George Ward Park, complete with pumpkin decorating, balloon twisting, and a ton of family fun. Over 130 people enjoyed the fall festivities. Drs. Guangjie (Jeff) Cheng and Gang Liu won the inaugural cornhole tournament, with Drs. Mike Wells and Jarrod Barnes finishing in second place.

UAB researchers have shown, for the first time, that reduced dietary potassium promotes elevated aortic stiffness in a mouse model, as compared with normal-potassium-fed mice. Such arterial stiffness in humans is predictive of heart disease. The article by Yabing Chen, PhD (Pathology) and co-authors Paul Sanders, MD (Professor, Nephrology), Anupam Agarwal, MD (Professor and Director, Nephrology) and Louis Dell’Italia, MD (Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) was published in JCI Insight.
Tiffany Carson, PhD (Assistant Professor, Preventive Medicine) recently presented findings from her work exploring racial differences in the gut microbiota of blacks and whites at the American Association for Cancer Research Conference on the Science of Cancer Health Disparities in Racial/Ethnic Minorities and the Medically Underserved.
The Department is proud to recognize three IM Residents, Chaitanya Allamneni, MD (PGY-2) Neha Hingorani, MD (PGY-2) and Nicolas Ruiz, MD (PGY-1) for taking special care of a patient in hepatology clinic. According to the attending physician, they went out of their way to provide compassion, holding the patient’s hand and offering words of encouragement during a necessary procedure. Kudos for modeling a UAB core value – Always Care!
Stefan Kertesz, MD (Professor, Preventive Medicine) has received the 2017 award for Most Downloaded Manuscript by the journal Substance Abuse. The manuscript calls for better understanding, policy, and treatment for opioid addiction.
Coming next week to Medical Grand Rounds. UAB Associate Professor of Cardiovascular Disease Carrie Lenneman, MD, will present, "Cardio-Oncology: Forging a New Collaborative Specialty” at noon on Wednesday, November 1, in Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium.
