A multidisciplinary team of Department of Medicine investigators including Drs. Ken Boockvar, Lisa Zubkoff, and Maria Danila, received funding from the VHA National Center for Patient Safety to establish a Center for Medication Safety in Aging. Polypharmacy and inappropriate prescribing are associated with adverse drug events, emergency department visits, acute hospitalizations, and healthcare costs. The project aims to develop, evaluate, and disseminate deprescribing interventions and improve medication safety in veterans.

Genetic Variant Plus Age Increases Risk of Heart Failure
Cardiovascular Disease faculty Drs. Pankaj Arora and Gretchen Wells report that in the U.S., carrying the V1421 variant of the transthyretin gene significantly increases the risk of heart failure and death in Black individuals over the age of 50, contributing to approximately 1 million years of life lost.
UAB Residents Win Regional Medical Jeopardy Competition
Internal Medicine residents Drs. Meet Patel, Lauren Anderson, and Dan Weintraub won the Doctor's Dilemma Medical Jeopardy competition at the 2024 Alabama and Mississippi American College of Physicians Annual Scientific Meeting. They will represent Alabama in the 2025 national competition.
