Wednesday afternoon, the Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and Education celebrated 25 years of serving the community through interdisciplinary health services, outcomes research, and training. Founding Director Norman Weissman, Ph.D., (Professor Emeritus, School of Health Professions) opened remarks by reflecting on the establishment of the program. He highlighted the contributions of his team, Catarina Kiefe, M.D., Ph.D., Jeroan Allison, M.D., MS, and UAB leadership.

Ken Saag, M.D., MSC, (Professor and Director, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology) who served as the director from 2010-2020, followed by emphasizing the invaluable mentorship he received as a COERE member. Current director Mike Mugavero, M.D., MHSc, (Professor, Infectious Diseases) concluded with admiration and gratitude for the people. "The COERE is the people who run the programs, as well as the members. The people make it happen!" Congratulations, to COERE for 25 years of innovation, training, and research.
Nellore Named Heersink Featured Discovery Awardee
Anoma Nellore, M.D., (Associate Professor, ID) and colleagues received the Featured Discovery award for their research which identified a subset of influenza-specific effector memory B cells that may predict long-lived antibody responses. This discovery could help indicate the level of immunity protection in vaccinated humans.
Shalev, Xu Report Effects of Verapamil on Type 1 Diabetes
In a follow up study, endocrinologists Anath Shalev, M.D., (Professor) and Guanlan Xu, Ph.D., (Instructor) found that verapamil prevented the decline of the hormone IGF-1 and promoted IGF-1 signaling in pancreatic beta cells which resulted in anti-diabetic effects in patients with Type 1 diabetes.
Bansal, Geisler Study T Cell-Mediated Immune Response in Chlamydia
Infectious Diseases faculty Anju Bansal, Ph.D., (Associate Professor) and Will Geisler, MD, MPH, (Professor) received funding from NIAID to investigate the role of HLA-E restricted CD8 T cells in clearing Chlamydia infections in women. Results could aid in the development of vaccine design.
Oparil Sheds Light on Refractory Hypertension on UAB MedCast
Suzanne Oparil, M.D., (Distinguished Professor, CVD) joined UAB MedCast to provide insight about refractory hypertension, its distinctive characteristics, at risk populations, and treatment options. She encourages doctors to empower patients with knowledge to lessen RHTN's impact.
